In the Bible, God instructs the church to maintain two offices (Philippians 1:1). First, the office of pastor/elder/overseer is to be maintained by men who shepherd the flock with the Word of God (1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, 1 Peter 3:1-5). Second, the office of deacon is to be filled by exemplary members of the church who serve the church in practical ways, freeing up the elders to be given to the ministry of the Word (1 Timothy 3:8-13, Acts 6:1-6).
Below is a brief video on biblical leadership in the church.
Pastors / Elders
Jeff Lacine (Lead Pastor/Elder)
Jeff Lacine was captured by God in April of 2000. Ever since then Jeff has had a passion to glorify God through preaching, evangelism, and discipleship. He received a B.A. from Multnomah University (Portland, OR) and a M.Div. and Th.M. from Bethlehem College & Seminary (Minneapolis, MN). He and his wife, Chelsi, have four children; Hosanna (11), Hope (9), Abraham (5), and Haven (3). In his free time he enjoys reading, fishing, camping and hiking with his family. Jeff has served as the pastor of Sellwood Baptist Church since January of 2014. For more about Jeff's testimony, click here to read an autobiographical sketch.
John Wold (Lay Pastor/Elder)
By God's grace, John Wold came to trust in Christ as a young child, and he hasn't looked back since. He and his wife, Susan, have served Sellwood Baptist Church as faithful members for over 50 years. They raised their three children in the Sellwood neighborhood and have been blessed with four grandchildren. In addition to loving to study God's Word, John likes to do leather work and spend time with his family.
Kurt Heath (Lay Pastor/Elder)
Kurt Heath became a Christian his freshman year of high school. After graduating from Wheaton College, Kurt went on to work at a communications firm in Washington D.C., and made the historic Capitol Hill Baptist his church home. Between stints working as a congressional communications officer, Kurt completed a pastoral residency at Capitol Hill Baptist, where he learned more about church leadership and pastoral ministry. He works for a PR firm in downtown Portland and lives in Gladstone with his wife Jayna and four kids. Originally from Ohio, Kurt is (and always will be) a die-hard Buckeye's fan.
Susan has faithfully served in the children's ministry of Sellwood Baptist Church for decades, and she continues to serve the church as a pianist and Deacon for Member Care. She loves meeting new people, visiting members of the church, and spending time with her husband, three children, and four grandchildren.
Faith was rescued by God in the eighth grade when he revealed her sin and gave her a new heart to love and serve Him. After graduating from Marshall High School, she attended Multnomah School of the Bible where she met her husband, Darrel. She & Darrel have four adult children and one son-in-law. She is thankful to be part of the Sellwood family serving as deacon in Children’s ministry. She also enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and enjoying the beauty of God’s creation.
Josh Schneider (Ministry Assistant)
Josh Schneider was born and raised in Beaverton, Oregon. Although he was raised to read the Bible, pray and regularly attend Church services, it wasn't until his senior year of high school that he realized that "good christian behavior" could not earn him the right to fellowship with God. Having turned from his own dead works to faith in Christ, Josh went to Bible College at Bethlehem College and Seminary, where he graduated with a B.A. in Biblical and Theological Studies. Josh also works at Cor Deo Christian Academy and lives in the Sellwood Neighborhood with his two roommates and his roommates' dog (Tolstoy) and a few bunnies.
